Tech Resume

Your marketing tool
Your resume is your sales brochure and tells the recipient:
  • Who you are
  • What you have accomplished
  • Why you are a match for this position

Your resume speaks for you in your absence, so take the time to make it strong. Here are some tips:
  • Target your resume to the job you are applying for — don't just send the same resume out for multiple jobs. It should tell the reader that you have experience, education, and skills that fit their search.
  • Keep the information brief but concise. Use bullets whenever possible. Hiring managers will not wade through mounds of irrelevant verbage.
  • Highlight the accomplishments that match the requirements of the job you want.
  • Be sure to spell-check!
  • Have someone else (even better, more than one person) read and edit your resume.

Format
The resume length should match your experience.
One page - Just out of school or only a couple of positions
Two pages - Multiple jobs and 10+ years of experience

The typical resume has four sections:
Summary
Experience
Education
Skills
usually in this order.

However, if you have very little relevant experience and/or are just graduating from school with your A.S. in Telecommunications, you might want to lead with the education rather than the experience section.

Summary statement
  • Tells the reader what makes you qualified and yet different (i.e. more valuable) than other applicants; this is really your positioning statement.

Experience section
  • Summarizes your employment history in reverse chronological order.
Present your past jobs in terms of P A R:

    (P) Problem- What types of challenges or problems did you face?
    (A) Action - What action did you take to alleviate this problem?
    (R) Result - What was the result? How did your employer benefit?

Include your PAR accomplishments that are most impressive - and most relevant to your new job - for each previous employer.

Education
  • Highlights the highest degree you've received or will be receiving plus certificates, other training programs, and relevant exams.

Skills
  • Detail the main skills that make you qualified for this job.
