NACTEL Student Stories

Mary retired from Verizon in December 2007 after 35 years of service.  During her tenure at Verizon, she had always hoped to earn a Bachelor’s degree, but as Mary states, “Life got in the way, and I wasn’t able to get started on my degree for a long time.”

Mary began pursuing her goal by initially enrolling in the Next Step program.  After graduating from Next Step, she received a company email about the NACTEL program at Pace University.  She decided that it was finally time to pursue her dream of getting that Bachelor’s degree, so she enrolled not only for herself, but also to set an example for her children.

Mary stated that getting her online degree was very difficult at times.  She studied during the evenings and over her lunch break.  “At the time my children were not doing very well in school, so I had to show them that if I can do it, you can do it.  To inspire my children, I posted my high grades on the refrigerator.”

Her hard work and dedication has paid off.  She graduated with an overall GPA of 3.89.  Her positive influence on her children paid off as well, as they both now have college degrees.

Even though Mary has retired, she feels that she reached a personal goal and also set an example for her grandchildren.  In her retirement, she wants to enjoy her two granddaughters, travel and, “Basically do what I want to do because it is my time now!”
