New Online Program in Networking Technologies

Greenwood Village, CO: NACTEL, the education partnership of Verizon, SBC, Qwest, Frontier/Citizens, the CWA and the IBEW, has announced a new online program in networking technologies that is being offered by its education partner, Pace University.

The Pace program includes: two Jump Start courses, to familiarize students with PC readiness for Broadband; an Introduction to Broadband Certificate, with technical communications, math and basic computer courses in addition to DC/AC circuits and Broadband basics; and a Broadband Essentials Certificate, comprised of courses in cabling, operating systems, networking technologies and security, plus hardware maintenance and troubleshooting.

Students may elect to take the individual certificates or combine them towards earning the A.S. degree in Applied Information Technology, Networking Technologies track. The degree program is 64 credits and can be completed in approximately 2 years, assuming part-time study.

"This program will enable our employees to prepare themselves for 'fiber-to-the-home' positions in the future. Plus, it will give them a well-rounded knowledge base so they can better help our customers with today's emerging telecommunications technologies" says Dan Crocitto, Verizon Manager of Educational Partnerships.

NACTEL (www.nactel.org) partner employees and union members get a special discounted tuition rate for the program, however, the online Networking Technologies degree and certificates program is open to all. The courses are instructor-led, accessible 24/7, and monitored by the NACTEL partners to ensure quality and relevance to today's economic environment.

The NACTEL coalition, which is in its sixth year of operations, launched the industry's first online associate's degree program in Telecommunications with Pace University in Fall, 1999. In Fall 2003, Pace added an online B.S. degree in telecom technologies to help its associate's degree graduates continue their education. To date, over 2,100 students from across the country have participated in this completely online program.

For students who are not technically oriented, NACTEL has recently added an online Certificate in Sales and Customer Service for Telecommunications from Aims Community College and, three Certificates in Financial Services Studies with New England College of Finance. Both of these certificates are targeted to students who wish to enter or advance into related positions with the telecommunications industry.

"The success of the Pace telecom technologies programs attests to the viability and potential of an industry-driven online education coalition like NACTEL," says its Executive Director, Susan Kannel. "And, our new programs testify to the commitment our partners have made to support the education and advancement of this workforce."
