How Online Learning Works

Web-based education, or "online learning", works very much like a traditional classroom experience. Instructors work with NACTEL to design a learning experience that is academically sound and aligned with the needs of this industry. Faculty members prepare the materials, the lectures, assignments, and exams. They also assign the textbooks, decide the goals of the courses, and determine how students must achieve those goals.
The learning materials are then embedded into interactive web pages that are stored on the college or university computers for easy access via an Internet connection. (Check Technical Requirements)
After registration, students receive login and password information and can go to their courses and view the "lecture," assignments, additional reading material, student chat rooms, and self-tests. The online instructor provides deadlines for assignments, monitors progress, provides feedback on coursework, and offers extra help.
Communications are conducted via email, although students can arrange a phone conversation with their instructor during office hours, if necessary. Assignments are submitted via email in most cases, and exams are also conducted online. Classroom participation is conducted via discussion groups and some live chat sessions.
Students can access all courses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are responsible for keeping up with their weekly coursework, which typically entails 8 -12 hours per week per course. Courses range from 9 to 15 weeks in length.
To be successful in an online learning program students need self-motivation, self-discipline and good writing skills, so before signing up, check out the self-quiz: Is Online Learning for Me?
