Cable Splicing Technicians

Also known as:
Network Technician     Facility Technician

Meet the Tech(s) currently employed in this job category.

Position summary
  • Repair, maintain, splice, and test subscriber line, carrier plant and/or line fiber optic plant
  • Splice new cable and make splicing rearrangements on existing facilities in buried, underground, aerial and building work locations
  • Test and adjust complex equipment using signal generators, oscilloscopes, transmission measuring sets, volt-ohm-millimeters
  • Connect and cross connect equipment
  • Join, repair, and rearrange cable conductors in utility holes
  • Install, inspect, rearrange, test, repair and remove:
    • Telephone sets
    • Radio loops
    • Video pickups
    • Data circuits
    • Complex multi line telephone systems
    • Alarm systems
    • Mobile phones
  • May also include:
    • Construction work
    • Work with heavy-duty power equipment and hand tools
    • Operating heavy-duty and hydraulic equipment


Work Environment
  • Both indoors and outdoors, all weather and all seasons
  • Can be vigorous, and may include
    • Moving, carrying, lifting heavy items
    • Climbing wooden poles and fiberglass ladders
    • Heights up to 75 ft
  • Variable hours; may involve shift work, overtime, weekends and holidays
  • Involves extensive interaction with customers

Skills Needed
This entry-level position requires:
  • Understanding of basic telephony and electricity
  • Ability to operate equipment for testing and repairing of telecommunication circuits
  • Basic keyboard and Windows based software skills
  • Communication skills, both written and spoken


Educational/Experience Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • State driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and the ability to drive a vehicle with manual gearshift. May require Class A license (heavy equipment, tractor/trailer).
  • Passing scores on qualifying exams
  • Employer-sponsored training
  • NACTEL's Introduction to Telecommunications Certificate is targeted to this job title.


Pay range
$50,000 to $70,000, depending on prior experience, region of the country, the employer, and the amount of overtime

(At one company, Qwest, the title of Network Technician can be included in more areas than just Cable Splicing. This title goes across several functions: Installation and Maintenance, Cable Splicing, cable maintenance, line crew, plus unique functions such as air pressure.)
