Resume Tips
A Marketing Tool
Your resume is your sales brochure and tells the recipient:
- Who you are
- What you have accomplished
- Why you are a match for this position
Your resume speaks for you in your absence, so take the time to make it strong. Here are some tips:
- Target your resume to the job you are applying for — don't just send the same resume out for multiple jobs. It should tell the reader that you have experience, education, and skills that fit their search.
- Keep the information brief but concise. Use bullets whenever possible. Hiring managers will not wade through mounds of irrelevant verbiage.
- Highlight the accomplishments that match the requirements of the job you want.
- Be sure to spell-check!
- Have someone else (even better, more than one person) read and edit your resume.
Avoid being too personal:
- While your personal interests and hobbies may be important to you, they may distract the reader, or worse, cause them to question your professionalism.
- Likewise, make sure your e-mail address is appropriate and doesn’t contain potentially unprofessional personal references. (e.g. hotbabe@domain.com or workstinks@domain.com)
