Resume Format

The resume length should match your experience.

  • One page - Just out of school or only a couple of positions
  • Two pages - Multiple jobs and 10+ years of experience

The typical resume has four sections:

  1.  Summary statement
    • Tells the reader what makes you qualified and yet different (i.e. more valuable) than other applicants; this is really your positioning statement.
  2. Experience section
    • Summarizes your employment history in reverse chronological order. Present your past jobs in terms of P.A.R.
      • (P) Problem- What types of challenges or problems did you face?
      • (A) Action - What action did you take to alleviate this problem?
      • (R) Result - What was the result? How did your employer benefit?
    • Include your P.A.R. accomplishments that are most impressive - and most relevant to your new job - for each previous employer.
  3. Education
    • Highlights the highest degree you've received or will be receiving plus certificates, other training programs, and relevant exams. If you have very little relevant experience and/or are just graduating from school with your A.S. in Telecommunications, you might want to lead with the education rather than the experience section.
  4. Skills
    • Detail the main skills that make you qualified for this job.
