Line/Station Installers & Repairers

Meet the Tech(s) currently employed in this job category.

Position Summary
Responsible for installing, testing, maintaining and repairing telephone circuitry and equipment for both residential and business customers on their premises.

Work Environment
  • Both indoors and outdoors, all weather and all seasons
  • Can be vigorous, and may include
    • Moving, carrying, lifting heavy items
    • Climbing wooden poles and fiberglass ladders
    • Heights up to 75 ft
    • Confined spaces (i.e.: attics, crawl spaces, manholes, trenches)
  • May require driving long distances to the client's location
  • May require significant overtime
  • Involves extensive interaction with customers

Skills Needed
This entry-level position requires:
  • Understanding of basic telephony and electricity
  • Ability to operate equipment for testing and repairing of telecommunication circuits
  • Basic keyboard and Windows based software skills
  • Communication skills, both written and spoken


Educational/Experience Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • State driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and the ability to drive a vehicle with manual gearshift. May require Class A license (heavy equipment, tractor/trailer).
  • Passing scores on qualifying exams
  • Employer-sponsored training
  • NACTEL's Introduction to Telecommunications Certificate is targeted to this job title.


Pay range
$50,000 to $70,000, depending on prior experience, region of the country, the employer, and the amount of overtime

(At one company, AT&T, Systems Technicians can also be Complex and Special Services Installers and Repairers.)
